As a graduate student at the University of Illinois, Green Velvet (aka Cajmere) became engrossed in the local house scenes and culture before returning to Chicago to produce tunes of his own. A year and some maxed out credit limits later, he made an imprint on the dance community with his infectious experiment, “Coffee Pot” (It’s Time for the Percolator) as Cajmere, moving on to more complex musical and lyrical arrangements with songs like Lidell Townsell’s “Get With U” and “Brighter Days,” which landed him on the Billboard Dance Chart at #2. After establishing his own label, Relief Records, he found new life as Green Velvet, and dropped the first tune on his new label. Since then, the imprint of this artist under his Cajmere and Green Velvet monikers remains fresh with the help of his network of DJ buddies from around the world, and his Cajual Records residency in Chicago, ‘Green Velvet & Friends.’ In addition to DJ sets, he hit the road with his live show, performing original tracks in front of crowds numbering in the tens of thousands.
